Racial tensions continued in Georgia, even after African Americans were granted citizenship by the Fourteenth Amendment. This was evidenced by their removal from the Georgia General Assembly in 1868. One of the most succesful black Republican politicians of that time: Henry McNeal Turner from the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) sucessfully led the  removed members to lobby the federal government to reseat them.
