Alex and Peter win some money and share it in the ratio 6:1. Alex gets £50 more than Peter. How much did they get altogether?

Peter = x

6x = x + 50
5x = 50
x = 10

Alex = £60
Peter = £10

together = £70
Ratio 

Alex : Peter : Total
  6 .  :   1      :   7
 
Difference in shares = 6 - 1 = 5
5 shares = £50

1 share = £50 ÷ 5
1 share = £10

7 shares = £10 x 7 = £70
