I recommend that state leaders replace the Articles of Confederation. We need a new Constitution. I have listed three weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation below. I include an explanation of why each weakness is a problem.
Weakness #1: Congress could not create taxes
Explanation: Taxes help pay for the government’s functions. The Congress could only request money from the state legislature, but if the state legislature did not send any, Congress would not have money to run the government. This should not be permitted, as the government could collapse if the states fail to pay the money.
Weakness #2: Each state printed its own currency
Explanation: To do business across state borders, this would require a person to obtain money from several different states. In addition, the value of this money was different across the states. In Massachusetts, it would be very complicated to do business with Georgia, while people in Virginia could do business with their fellow Virginians easily. Every state should have the same currency.
Weakness #3: New laws would require the support of nine of the 13 states, more than a majority.
Explanation: Requiring nine of the 13 states to pass new laws made it almost impossible to get this kind of majority to pass new legislation. It is likely that 8 states would vote for the law and 5 would not, or 7 states would, and 6 would not.
