Rays hit the atmosphere and light is scattered by nitrogen and oxygen. Blue is more affected than red and green wavelengths.

it is not always blue, it is purple, pink, and orange sometimes. But that is because the molecules in the air scatter blue light. When we look at the sunset we see red and orange because the blue light has scattered away from the sun.
