Katsushika Hokusai, in his woodcut “The Great Wave off Shore at Kanagawa,” simplified and ordered the visual elements in the work to create compositional unity. 
He wanted to create this unity of every aspect of his composition, which is why he altered the elements within the woodcut. He managed to unify all these elements that constitute his composition so as to create perfection.
