Margaret O'Neill (or O'Neale) Timberlake Eaton was the wife of Tennessee senator and secretary of war John Henry Eaton, and a close friend of Andrew Jackson. She died on November 8, 1879.
Their union gave rise to the Petticoat Affair, a major national scandal. Jackson and Calhoun initially appeared to get along better than Calhoun had with Adams, but that condition didn't last long. They clashed on matters of policy, particularly the nullification policy. On numerous topics, including states' rights, Calhoun and Jackson had opposing viewpoints. Jackson's personal hostility toward Calhoun appears to have its roots in the then-current Washington "social scene." The way Peggy, Jackson's wife, was treated by Mrs. Calhoun irritated Jackson.
