A skeletal muscle can contract without shortening.
Define contraction of muscle.
When you perform an exercise, your muscles contract, either tightening, lengthening, or both. When you stretch or use weights during an exercise session, it may also occur when you hold or pick up anything. Muscle relaxation, which occurs when the muscles contract back to their original state, is frequently followed by muscle contraction.
When a muscle is contracted isometrically, there is no movement of the joints and the muscle length is constant. When there is joint damage and joint motion is not recommended or likely to reduce pain, during early strengthening while the limb is supported, or to increase blood flow through alternating contractions, the use of isometric contractions may be indicated. For some functional activities, isometric contractions are also necessary.
