What is Acute renal failure (AKF)?

Acute renal failure which is also called acute kidney failure is defined as the rapid development of dysfunction of the kidney due to an ongoing infection or injury.

The clinical manifestations of acute renal failure include the following:

  • Decreased urinary output,
  • swelling due to fluid retention,
  • nausea,
  • fatigue and
  • shortness of breath.

In a healthy individual, the urine output for a day (24 hours) is 1000 - 2000mls. When an individual produces only 250ml / 24hrs of urine output, it shows that the body retains more fluid than its able to remove.

The kidney is known to help in the body balance of water and electrolyte. Therefore, a urine output of 250ml / 24hrs shows that there is an acute renal failure occuring after the gunshot event.
