What was the point of the poem The New Colossus?
The poem was inspired by a contentious immigration discussion. Emma Lazarus penned The New Colossus to aid with the funding of the pedestal's construction for the enormous sculpture. "Give me your weary, your hungry, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," reads one of the well-known lines.
The poem orders the "huddled masses" of the ancient kingdoms to deliver her their outcasts. She will make sure that people who want to "breathe free" yet are "homeless" may find safety. In the last verse, the torch from the statue reappears as a "lamp" that shines a light on the "golden door" of American possibility.
