Prior to it, while Europe had colonies spread over the globe, its influence over these areas was rather small. The industrial revolution gave Europe the ability to successfully conquer and profitably sustain so many colonies abroad, which was the driving factor behind this New Imperialism.
There was a tremendous need for raw resources to meet demand because the Industrial Revolution astronomically boosted the manufacturing capability of Western states. As a result, the Western powers sought out territories where raw materials were abundant and easily accessible.
