The Los Angeles region employed about two million people in the aerospace industry during World War II, producing about 300,000 aircraft. The largest industry in the world at the time was Southern California-based aircraft manufacturing.
And despite setbacks following the end of World War II and once again with the completion of the Apollo program, the 1980s saw further expansion. During this time, Southern California was home to one-third of all aerospace engineers in the nation, supporting a workforce of close to 500,000. However, once the Cold War ended in 1991, both the commercial and government sectors experienced a decline in activity, and thousands of employees lost their employment as aerospace firms consolidated or transferred their operations to Washington, D.C. In just five years, over two dozen major aerospace firms merged into three: Boeing-McDonnell Douglas, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon-Hughes.
