It took a while for mum and dad to get used to the "Do Not Disturb" notice hanging from the doorknob. Dad, for instance, had to remind himself over and over again to check for the notice before barging in.
After a while, they learned to respect my preferred hours of solitude themselves.
Notice that the sentence in the last paragraph is complete without the highlighted Intensive pronoun.
