Sonnets can be defined as lyrical poems that have a musical flow. The most important ideas and subjects of the sonnet are:

  • love and death
  • Familial love
  • Lost of love
  • Unrequited love
  • Divinity
  • Ideal Woman

Reinassance humanism believed that humans can be changed dramatically by giving them education.  Sonnets were highly appreciated and written in during the renaissance. These were used to describe both the spiritually elevated and erotic love.

Difference between Shakesperain sonnets and Petrarchan sonnets:

  • Petrarchan wrote in octaves with sestets while Shakespeare wrote in quatrains.
  • Petrarchan wrote from a man's point of view who is longing for a woman while Shakespeare's focus was the present situation

Similarities between Shakesperain sonnets and Petrarchan sonnets:

  • Both sonnets are composed of fourteen lines.
  • Both used lambic parameter
