What that is saying is that y equals five times whatever x is +40.
So, if x=1, then y=45

To solve these, all I did was plug the number in as x. For example,
If x=2:
y=5(2)+40
y=10+40
y=50
Or, if x=-2:
y=5(-2)+40
y=-10+40
