While Mount Rushmore is a popular tourist site for some Americans, it has a painful history for Native Americans.
The Sioux were upset about mount Rushmore was built on traditional Sioux land. The United States pledged the Sioux territory, which included the Black Hills, in perpetuity in the Treaty of 1868. Perpetuity barely lasted until gold was discovered in the highlands in the 1870s, and prospectors flocked there.
The Sioux were therefore forced to give up the Black Hills portion of their reservation by the federal government.
