The plot line had to do with the existence of witchcraft in Salem. If Betty had a demon in her possession, she yelled and attempted to jump off a building. Instead of just the young women, the entire town seeing this helped spread the story faster and persuaded the community of the involvement of witchcraft in the town. Gossip magazines have gone farther and faster than anticipated.
