Decide whether or not each of the following metals dissolves in 1 M HCl. For these metals that do dissolve, enter a balanced redox reaction showing what happens when the metal dissolves.
1. Cu
2. Fe

Respuesta :

I believe copper would dissolve iron would just get the rust off of it. Copper would boil then dissolve. idk what the second part would be. Hope this helps!

The metal which dissolves in 1M HCl solution is iron and formation if iron chloride takes place.

What is electrochemical series?

Electrochemical series is a reactive series in which metal is arranged from most reactive metal to less reactive metal.

According to the electrochemical series iron (Fe) is present at the top of the hydrogen atom and copper (Cu) is present below the hydrogen atom.

  • So iron will displace the hydrogen from the HCl solution and chemical reaction will be represented as:

        Fe + 2HCl → FeCl₂ + H₂

  • And copper will not able to displace hydrogen from the HCl solution so copper will reamin as in the initial state.

Hence iron will displace hydrogen from HCl solution.
