The opening quotation in the Legend of Oedipus plays an important role in the development of the theme.  It reveals the guilt and shame that will consequently follow when the gods are defied.

  • When Oedipus was borne, the Oracle predicted that he would eventually murder his father and marry his mother (King Laius and Queen Jocasta).  Based on this oracle, Oedipus was thrown into the evil forest to die.  He was rescued by a hunter.

  • The hunter took him to Corinth, where he was brought up.  The Oracle still followed him there. Thinking that the King of Corinth was his real father, he left for Thebes.  But he encountered his real father on the road, and because of his obstinacy, he fought and killed his father.  Later, he got married to his mother, and they had a child.

  • This gave way for the manifestation of the divination.  There was trouble in the land of Thebes as peace had been murdered.  Again, the Oracle pinpointed that he was the source of the trouble because he had fulfilled the earlier divination.

Thus, the opening quotation of the Legend of Oedipus enables the reader to appreciate the development of the passage’s theme of the Greek mythology.
