The way to set these problems up is actually super easy, I usually stink at math but these are pretty easy for me. So here ya go...


How they teach it in class, you'd normally set it up like this: [tex]\frac{x}{5} = \frac{4.2}{6}[/tex], (you might want to go ahead and set it up like that just to be safe, it's up to you), but in the end all your doing is cross-multiplying and dividing. So let me show you an easier way that I use:

Now I usually just multiply the whole numbers that are across from each other, so as you can see, 4.2 and 5 are across from each other (diagonally). When you multiply those together you get 21.

Now you divide 21 by 6. You do that because 6 is across from x, and by dividing you'll get x by itself. So x=3.5
