President Wilson wanted the United States to remain neutral because of the nation's ethnic diversity.
During the outbreak of the First World War, President Woodrow Wilson proposed that the United States serve as a mediator between the Central Powers and the Allied Powers. However, European powers from both sides rejected the country's offers to help reach a peaceful solution. Afterward, Wilson executed a neutrality policy, as he wanted to maintain commercial relationships with countries on both sides. However, this was prevented by the British naval blockade over Germany.
The neutrality policy would end when German submarines sank American commercial ships, causing the entrance of the United States to the War.
