L'Ouverture  helped transform the Black insurgency into a revolutionary movement, which made Saint-Domingue, the most prosperous slave colony of the time, into the first free colonial society and the first one to reject race as a basis of social ranking. His actions made the colony a de facto autonomous colony. Moreover, its constitution proclaimed him governor for life.
