Split the equation into two separate equations (one with a positive and one with a negative), and then solve both equations.

POSITIVE:

2b - 9 = b - 6

b = 3

NEGATIVE:

2b - 9 = -(b - 6)

2b - 9 = -b + 6

3b = 15

b = 5

Answer: b=3, b=5
